This feeling is common when someone is nervous or stressed. It seems counterintuitive, though. In stressful situations, it would make more sense to become sharper, more alert, and better able to recall information to handle the challenge.
For instance, primitive humans, if suddenly faced with a tiger when they were out hunting berries, would have had no use for a brain reboot. And yet, today, this response is not infrequently encountered, be it in a job interview, a big game, or in making a presentation in the full view of a crowd.
As it happens, this is really a false alarm on the part of the body. The very biological mechanisms that once assisted our forebears in staying alive can occasionally be at cross purposes in contemporary life.
The Role of the Amygdala
The first brain component to comprehend is the amygdala. The amygdala, found in the medial temporal lobe, regulates emotion, particularly fear and anxiety.
When the body perceives something potentially dangerous, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis gets stimulated, initiating a chain of reactions to prepare you to confront danger. Previously, this system shielded individuals from life and death danger. Now, it may be activated in circumstances that are socially or psychologically stressful but physically safe.

The final big chunk of the puzzle is in the prefrontal cortex. It is in the very front part of the brain and is in charge of rational thinking, decision-making, and working memory.
Even mild stress can quickly impair its performance. Imagine the prefrontal cortex as the CEO of your brain. Under pressure, it is as if the CEO is locked out of the office where all the important files are kept. This once occurred during a tennis tiebreaker. All of a sudden, my mind drew a complete blank. I had forgotten the score, my game plan, and even how to serve the ball. My amygdala had hijacked my brain, and it had zero concern for any rational game strategy.
Athletes frequently report feeling the same way. A basketball player at the foul line with seconds remaining in a tied game may unexpectedly flub shots he has attempted countless times in practice. A performer playing for a huge crowd may forget the opening note of a sonata he has practiced for months.
They are not caused by inadequacy of ability or training. They result from the brain’s stress system engaging at the wrong time.
Why the Brain Treats Social Threats Like Physical Danger
From an evolutionary view, acceptance in society determined one’s probability of survival. Prehistoric humans lived in communities, and rejection or humiliation could result in the loss of protection, access to resources, and assistance.
That is why the brain perceives contemporary social pressures as if they present genuine threats to life. The amygdala does not differentiate between danger lurking in the bushes and a room of individuals observing you show a slideshow.
Prevention and Recovery Strategies of Brain Freezes
Here is the best part: you can teach yourself to remain unfazed in high-pressure situations.
Practice Under Simulated Stress
Put yourself in situations that replicate the stress you expect. If you have a big interview, set up mock interviews at home or at work and do them as if they were real. If you are preparing for a sports event, practice in front of a crowd or in front of a moving scoreboard. That makes you comfortable and prepares the body to handle its stress response.
Deep Breathing
Proper, controlled breathing brings on the parasympathetic nervous system, which calms down an overactive amygdala. That, in turn, lowers levels of the stress hormone and makes the prefrontal cortex function better. Even a few deep breaths before a big moment can help.
Grounding Technique

Take a minute or two to visualize yourself succeeding in the very situation which makes you apprehensive. Visualize yourself answering questions easily, making a beautiful serve, or addressing a crowd clearly. Visualization trains the mind to link the situation to confidence instead of panic.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation
This entails tensing and gradually releasing each muscle set in your body, beginning at the toes and progressing upward. It assists in unwinding stored tension and sends messages to the brain that you can safely relax.

When you are on the brink of greatness and your brain freezes, recall that there is nothing wrong with your brain. It is just operating on a survival program that may not always be suitable for the situation.
